Bama: The rehabilitation and modernization of the Bama perimeter are set to transform agricultural productivity in the region, enabling three annual production campaigns and a significant increase in rice output. Salif Tentika, the coordinator of the West Africa Food System Resilience Program (PRSA), Burkina Faso component, shared these developments.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the enhancements include constructing a dam on the Kou River and utilizing the Samendeni dam, which will facilitate rice production even during the dry season. The project aims to boost rice production from 9,352 to 15,610 tonnes per year and increase the market value of annual rice production from 2,473,317,900 FCFA to 3,512,250,000 FCFA.
These advancements promise to not only improve food security in the region but also contribute to economic growth by increasing the market value of rice, a staple food in the area. The strategic improvements in water management and infrastructure are pivotal in achieving these goals.
