Warriors Skipper Katsande Calls for More International Friendlies (allAfrica.com)

WARRIORS captain Willard Katsande has urged Zifa to organise more international friendly matches for Zimbabwe before the resumption of the 2017 African Cup of Nations qualifying campaign in March next year.

Katsande spoke in the wake of a stumble by the Warriors who were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Guinea at Rufaro on Sunday.

The Kaizer Chiefs midfielder who was one of the outstanding players on the afternoon believes the future looks bright for the Warriors despite the set-back.

He said the Warriors had a strong team that can go all the way and qualify for the finals to be held in Gabon if they had more time together.

Katsande added that he wants his troops to play more international friendly matches before the next qualifier against Swaziland next year.

“I thought we played well considering that we haven’t played together for a long time. We didn’t have much time together before this game,” he said.

“We got a point, we will take it but we missed some chances and conceded a soft goal.

“We could have done better but what is important now is to play as many friendly matches as possible before we play our next game next year.

“Zifa should arrange these friendly matches so that the team can gel. We have got a very good team and have better chances to qualify.”

The Warriors share top spot with Swaziland who drew 2-2 against Swaziland on four points in Group L. Guinea and Malawi have one point each.

Only the group winners plus the hosts qualify for the finals to be held in Gabon.

Up next for Zimbabwe next year is Swaziland whom they play in back to back clashes before hosting the Flames of Malawi and then wind off their campaign with a trip to Guinea – a fixture which could turn out to be the decider.
