Boy, Nine Drowns in Kumasi

By Issah Alhassan

RESIDENTS OF Sawaba, a suburb of Kumasi have mounted a search for the body of a nine year old boy suspected to have died after falling into an open drain on Saturday.

Murtala Abdulai was said to have fallen into the drain whilst trying to cross a big gutter, after a heavy downpour on Saturday night. Two slabs which serve as a bridge across the gutter reportedly broke down and in the process the deceased fell into the gutter which had running water flowing through heavily as a result of the torrential rains.

He was said to be playing with nine other friends around the area when the rains started coming and were asked to go home.

According to information gathered by a local broadcast journalist, Prince Appiah of LUV FM, the kids, in trying to rush home, decided to use the dilapidated bridge as a detour, resulting in the sad incident.

The body of Murtala Abdulai, at the time of compiling this report, had not been discovered as search continued. Residents say several efforts to get authorities to construct a permanent bridge over the gutter have proven futile, thus posing danger to people anytime it rains.
