Rwandan boxer Jean Pierre Cyiza knocked out Swaziland’s Mnel Mkambule on Monday in the African Youth Games held in Botswana. Coach Gashugi Kananura said Cyiza had a very good fight as they had planned against the opponent.
Cyiza, who fights in the 60kg lightweight category, put up a brilliant display and knocked out his opponent already in the second round – the first KO in the games. He will face South Africa’s Fuzile Azinga in the semi-finals.
“We hope to perform well against South Africa I have the feeling that we shall reach the finals, which is our aim, but of course we will then put up a determined fight to win gold,” Gashugi added.
In tennis, Ernest Habiyambere defeated Botswana’s Simito Sibanda 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 in his opening game played on the same day. In the girls category, Olive Tuyisenge beat Botho Tawana (Botswana) by 7-5, 6-2.
In volleyball, Rwanda beat South Africa on Monday by 3-0(25-11, 25-17, 2-16), earlier Sunday, they also defeated Botswana by three sets to nil (25-10, 25-11, and 25-15).
They will play Mauritius on Tuesday. So far they have four points, one from the 3-2 loss to Kenya and three points from the win against Botswana.
Aaron Taylor Knooce (golf), Delphine Uwababyeyi (Taekwondo) will play on Tuesday. Uwababyeyi will play in the under 44 category.
