WINDHOEK, Namibian head coach Ricardo Mannetti has named his final squad of 23 players to compete in the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN 2018) to be held in Morocco from Jan 12 to Feb 4.
The Namibia Football Association said in a statement here Wednesday that Mannetti had released injured players Calvin Spiegel and Immanuel Heita, who are nursing ankle and knee injuries, from his final selection.
Tijuana Tja Tjinotjiua and Gregory Auchumeb were also dropped, but will remain with the team until Saturday after a friendly match between the Brave Warriors and Rwanda. After that, the team will continue to prepare for the tournament in Tunis and will leave for their base in Morocco in Marrakech on Jan 11.
According to the media statement, Mannetti went for experience and versatility when he chose the 23 from the 27 players who were in camp in Tunisia.
He is quoted as saying team spirit remains high and the players are looking forward to performing well during the tournament.
"We looked at experience over the games played last year and also considering versatility in terms of tactics and options going into the CHAN tournament. All players remain positive, including Tjinotjiua and Auchumeb. The goal remains common and we are unified in that so far," Mannetti explained.
The Brave Warriors will face Cote d'Ivoire in their opening match on Jan 14 before playing Uganda on Jan 12 in Marrakech and Zambia in Casablanca in their final group match on Jan 22. The top two teams in each group advance to the quarterfinals.
