Ouagadougou: The exhibition “Thomas Sankara, the Return” has been officially inaugurated by Burkina Faso’s Minister of Communication, Culture, Arts and Tourism, Pingdwende Gilbert Ouedraogo. This event, held on October 15, 2025, at the National Museum, offers visitors an opportunity to delve into the life and legacy of Thomas Sankara, a pivotal figure in Burkina Faso’s history, until the end of December.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the Director General of the National Museum, Sabari Christian Dao, highlighted that the exhibition is designed to guide visitors through thematic areas that reflect Sankara’s life, philosophies, and ideals. It serves as a means to connect the past with present realities, encouraging reflection and dialogue. Dao emphasized that this initiative is a testament to preserving historical memory and fostering intergenerational connections, aiming to rekindle Sankara’s ideals in contemporary society.

Minister Pingdwende Ouedraogo noted that Thomas Sankara’s enduring influence is rooted in his advocacy for national sovereignty, social justice, integrity, and civic responsibility. “History remembers his lucid words, his clear vision, and his unshakeable faith in the ability of African peoples to take charge of themselves and decide their own destiny,” Ouedraogo stated. The exhibition is positioned as part of a broader heritage and educational initiative, underscoring the museum’s role as a space for memory and the transmission of revolutionary principles to younger generations.

The exhibition further calls on young people to adopt values of hard work, solidarity, and patriotism, promoting a Burkina Faso that remains true to its revolutionary roots. The showcase will be open until the end of December 2025, reinforcing the National Museum’s commitment to being a hub of remembrance, education, and cultural heritage promotion.

The opening ceremony was attended by ECOWAS MP, Senegalese Guy Marius Sagna, companions of Thomas Sankara, and numerous Pan-Africanists. The legacy of Thomas Sankara, who led Burkina Faso towards sustainable development during his tenure before his assassination in 1987, continues to inspire. Current leader Captain Ibrahim Traore is actively working to honor Sankara’s vision by steering the country towards a progressive popular revolution.
