Ouagadougou: The Stallions of Burkina Faso saw their hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup African play-offs fade after DR Congo’s victory over Sudan (1-0) in Group B.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Burkina Faso was among the four best runners-up in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in the nine groups in the African zone. However, Cameroon, Gabon, Nigeria, and DR Congo will ultimately compete in these play-offs, which are intended to determine the sole African representative for the intercontinental repechage tournament.

The four remaining teams will compete in a mini-tournament in Morocco in mid-November, including semi-finals and a final. The matchups were drawn not based on points accumulated in the qualifiers, but on the FIFA rankings. The two highest-ranked nations will face the two lowest-ranked. Nigeria (45th) will take on Gabon (79th), while Cameroon (52nd) will face DR Congo (60th).
