Zondoma: The Gourcy health district organized an advocacy workshop on Friday, October 3, 2025. The objective of this activity held at the Gourcy High Commission is to mobilize the community for the introduction of the new R21 malaria vaccine.
According to Burkina Information Agency, despite the many efforts made by the health system in the fight against malaria, this disease has long remained the leading cause of consultation and death in the country. This situation is expected to change with the development of a vaccine by Burkinabe researchers. After a successful trial phase in 25 health districts, the vaccine will now be rolled out across the country for children aged 5 months and older.
In pursuit of this goal, the Gourcy Health District initiated an advocacy workshop that brought together opinion leaders at the Gourcy High Commission. The meeting, chaired by High Commissioner Aboubacar Sidiki Nabe, aimed to equip participants with the necessary information to effectively contribute to mobilizing the population for the vaccine’s introduction.
The Chief Medical Officer of the Gourcy District, Bationo Bassana Constantin, stated that four doses are required to immunize children, with doses distributed between the child’s 5th and 15th month. He confirmed that the R21 malaria vaccine is now part of the vaccination schedule for children in Burkina Faso.
The session chairperson called upon stakeholders to play their part in effectively eliminating malaria, which has a significant impact on households.
