Gourma: An association trains young girls to make bins from used tires: On Saturday, October 4, 2025, the TAMBONLA association initiated theoretical and practical training for young girls in Fada N’Gourma as part of its “The Yennenga of the Environment” project. The activity, which is part of the promotion of female leadership and environmental protection, allowed participants to learn how to make trash cans from used tires.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the project coordinator, Amiratou Ilboudo, stated that “The Yennenga of the Environment” is an initiative of the TAMBONLA association, which works in several areas, including entrepreneurship and environmental protection. “This project involves recruiting volunteers, exclusively girls, whom we train on various topics related to the environment and sanitation,” she explained.
Ms. Ilboudo mentioned that after the October 4 training on making bins from recycled tires, other sessions will follow, particularly on sanitation. “After these training sessions, we will go to sites for internally displaced persons (IDPs) to clean them, provide bins and brooms and raise awareness among the population about sanitation,” she added.
The goal, she says, is twofold: to turn young girls into true community leaders and to encourage behavioral change among the population regarding hygiene and waste management. The project will run until the end of November.
For the consultant trainer, the manager of the NATURELLE company, Abdou Tankoano, the training focused on the management of plastic waste, in particular the recycling of used tires. “We first raised awareness among the participants about Law 045 on waste management before moving on to the practical phase,” he said.
Mr. Tankoano emphasized that transforming tires into trash cans is a local innovation that contributes to a healthy living environment. “These bins will allow us to collect and sort waste, which is essential in a context where waste management remains a major challenge in Fada N’Gourma,” he said.
Through this initiative, the TAMBONLA association aims to promote the active participation of young girls in environmental protection while fostering their empowerment through eco-entrepreneurial activities.
