Koosin/Commune of Doumbala: Threshing Fonio to the Rhythm of Bwa Culture

Koosin: After the fonio harvest, producers in the village of Konkuy-Boho begin threshing the fonio, performing local songs and dances. Men armed with sticks gathered around the fonio panicles for the activity on Wednesday, October 1, 2025.



According to Burkina Information Agency, in overflowing jubilation, men armed with sticks gathered around the fonio panicles, to thresh the fonio to the rhythm of the beating of the drums and tom-toms of the griots invited for the occasion. Men also have another way of beating fonio, which consists of trampling the fonio stalks with their feet for a long time in order to extract the seeds.



Still others beat the stems against large sticks placed for this purpose to remove the seeds from the fonio stems. When the fonio reaches maturity, the producers consult together and set a date for harvesting and threshing. Mutual aid and solidarity promote Bwa culture and the affirmation of social cohesion.
