Kourittenga: The Koupéla Detention and Correctional Facility (MACK) observed Nelson Mandela International Day with a unique gesture as inmates contributed 20,150 CFA francs to the Faso Mêbo initiative. The event was graced by the presence of Fernand Wenceslas Yicinbalo N’Do, the Secretary General of Kourittenga Province, representing the High Commissioner.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the event was organized under the theme “Implementation of community service in Burkina Faso: Role of stakeholders and impact on socio-economic development.” It featured several activities, including drug addiction awareness sessions, free medical and ophthalmological consultations, gutter cleaning, the inauguration of vocational training workshops, and a gala match.
The incarcerated individuals expressed their appreciation for the improvements in their living conditions. They highlighted enhancements such as better meals, provision of soap, blankets, mats, impregnated mosquito nets, televisions, and access to medi
cal consultations. Despite these improvements, they pointed out ongoing challenges, including electrical issues at the detention center, the lack of an isolation room in the infirmary for contagious diseases, and problems with their water supply.
Boureima Nikiema, the director of the Koupéla Detention and Correctional Facility, emphasized the administration’s dedication to supporting prisoners in social reintegration efforts. He assured that the prison administration would continue to address the inmates’ needs and reiterated the belief that every person has the potential to contribute positively to society.
The Belgian Development Agency (Enabel), a key financial partner for the event, funded the construction of three rooms dedicated to socio-professional training in sewing, metalwork, and woodwork. These facilities were built at a cost of 37,000,000 CFA francs and are fully equipped with the necessary tools and resources.
Sondéma Kologo, Project Manager-Appuis from Enabel, stated that the agency, committ
ed to successful reintegration, has been supporting the Burkinabe prison administration’s initiatives for several years. Enabel’s efforts are aimed at fostering a fairer and safer society through effective reintegration programs.
Fernand Wenceslas Yicinbalo N’Do, representing the High Commissioner, praised the prisoners’ contribution to “Faso Mêbo” and underscored the importance of their role in the nation’s development. He emphasized that the efforts made for the prisoners’ training and well-being reflect the government’s and its partners’ commitment to offering them a better life and preparing them for reintegration into society.
Certificates of recognition were awarded to individuals who have consistently supported the development and rehabilitation of the prisoners.
